Background of the Study
Pain management is one of the most critical aspects of caring for terminally ill elderly patients, as effective pain relief not only improves their quality of life but also enhances their overall comfort during the final stages of life. Elderly individuals with terminal illnesses often experience complex pain, which can be both physical and emotional, and may require tailored management strategies. In Plateau State, where access to specialized palliative care is limited, elderly patients may face challenges in receiving adequate pain management. Palliative care programs that focus on pain relief have shown positive outcomes in reducing suffering and improving the emotional well-being of terminally ill patients (Fawole & Akinyemi, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these pain management strategies in Plateau State, especially within the context of limited healthcare resources, has not been adequately investigated. This study will explore the effectiveness of various pain management strategies implemented for terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State.
Statement of the Problem
Terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State often suffer from unmanaged or poorly managed pain, which significantly impacts their quality of life. Despite the known benefits of palliative and pain management interventions, there is limited research on how these strategies are implemented and their effectiveness in the state. This study will examine the existing pain management strategies and assess their impact on terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of current pain management strategies for terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State.
To assess the impact of pain management strategies on the overall quality of life of terminally ill elderly patients.
To identify the barriers to effective pain management in terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State.
Research Questions
How effective are current pain management strategies for terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State?
What impact do pain management strategies have on the quality of life of terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State?
What are the barriers to effective pain management for terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State?
Research Hypotheses
Pain management strategies are effective in improving the quality of life for terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State.
Terminally ill elderly patients who receive appropriate pain management experience less physical and emotional distress.
Barriers such as insufficient healthcare resources and lack of palliative care training hinder the effectiveness of pain management for elderly patients in Plateau State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on terminally ill elderly patients in Plateau State who are receiving pain management interventions. Limitations include challenges in measuring pain levels and quality of life, as well as the potential variability in pain management approaches across different healthcare providers.
